Overview
Experience the Roof of Africa on a 7-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek via the Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” As the oldest and one of the most established routes on Kilimanjaro, Marangu is unique for offering overnight accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents.
The route follows a gradual and relatively direct trail through Kilimanjaro’s changing ecological zones, from lush rainforest and heathland to the stark alpine desert surrounding Kibo. A dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude before the demanding summit attempt. The ultimate goal is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. While Marangu has a gentler profile than some other routes, the summit day remains physically demanding and requires good preparation, determination, and proper acclimatization.
Highlights:
- Trek to Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point at 5,895 m
- Experience Kilimanjaro’s rainforest, heathland, moorland and alpine desert
- Sleep in mountain huts rather than tents
- Dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo Hut
- Optional acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi
- Sunrise experience during the summit attempt
- Professional mountain guide and support crew
- Airport pickup and return transfer available

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a warm welcome at either Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport. Your driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel in Arusha.
After check-in and time to settle in, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed pre-trek briefing. Your guide will explain the route, daily hiking schedule, altitude considerations, safety procedures, and what to expect during the summit attempt.
Your equipment will also be checked to ensure you have the appropriate clothing and trekking gear for the mountain.
Main Destination: Arusha
Accommodation: Tulia Spa & Boutique Hotel or similar
Meals & Drinks: Depending on hotel meal plan
After breakfast, you drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate, the main entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing registration and park formalities, you begin your trek through the lush montane rainforest.
The trail is surrounded by towering trees, tropical vegetation, colourful birdlife, and the possibility of spotting black-and-white colobus monkeys.
A short optional excursion to Maundi Crater provides beautiful views toward northern Tanzania and, on clear days, Kenya.
After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, where you settle in and enjoy your first night on Mount Kilimanjaro.
Elevation: 1,860 m to 2,700 m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Montane Forest
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals & Drinks: Breakfast, lunch and dinner; non-alcoholic drinks
After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and continue ascending through the open heathland and moorland zone.
The landscape becomes increasingly open, revealing impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, the two major volcanic cones of Kilimanjaro. Giant lobelias and groundsels add to the distinctive high-altitude scenery.
As you gain elevation, you may begin to notice the effects of altitude. Maintaining a slow, steady pace and drinking plenty of water are important as your body continues to adapt.
You arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon, where you have time to rest and enjoy the mountain surroundings.
Elevation: 2,700 m to 3,700 m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Heathland and Moorland
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals & Drinks: Breakfast, lunch and dinner; non-alcoholic drinks
Today is dedicated to acclimatization. Rather than continuing directly toward the summit, you spend an additional night at Horombo Hut, giving your body valuable time to adjust to the altitude.
Depending on your condition and weather conditions, your guide may lead you on an optional acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Hut, reaching higher elevations before returning to Horombo.
The day is intentionally paced to balance activity with rest. You will have time to enjoy the spectacular surroundings, stay hydrated, and prepare mentally and physically for the higher elevations ahead.
Lunch may be served at the hut or provided as a packed meal depending on the day’s activities.
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals & Drinks: Breakfast, lunch and dinner; non-alcoholic drinks
After breakfast, you leave Horombo and continue toward Kibo Hut.
The trail crosses the famous Saddle, the high-altitude desert between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse until the landscape transforms into a dramatic volcanic moonscape.
This is a steady ascent at high altitude, so your guide will maintain a controlled pace. Upon reaching Kibo Hut at approximately 4,700 metres, you have dinner and prepare for the summit attempt.
You will receive a summit briefing before getting as much rest as possible. The climb to Uhuru Peak begins during the night.
Elevation: 3,700 m to 4,700 m
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals & Drinks: Breakfast, lunch and dinner; non-alcoholic drinks
This is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
You begin the summit attempt around midnight, trekking in darkness with headlamps. The trail climbs steeply over rocky terrain and scree toward Gilman’s Point, located on the crater rim at approximately 5,681 metres.
After reaching the crater rim, you continue toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Standing at the summit, you can celebrate your achievement and take photographs while enjoying extraordinary views across the surrounding landscape. Weather and visibility permitting, sunrise from the summit area is one of the most memorable experiences on Kilimanjaro.
After the summit, you begin the long descent. You return to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments before continuing down to Horombo Hut for the night.
Because the summit section is extremely cold and demanding, warm layers, gloves, a hat, headlamp, suitable footwear, and sufficient water are essential.
Elevation: 4,700 m to 5,895 m, then down to 3,700 m
Distance: Approximately 6 km ascent and 15 km descent
Hiking Time: Approximately 6–8 hours ascent, followed by a long descent
Habitat: Alpine Desert and Moorland
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals & Drinks: All meals included; non-alcoholic drinks
After breakfast, you begin your final descent from Horombo Hut.
The trail takes you through the moorland and back toward Mandara Hut before continuing into the lush rainforest. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes increasingly dense.
The final section may be wet and muddy, particularly during rainy conditions, so trekking poles and suitable footwear are recommended.
At Marangu Gate, you complete the final park formalities and receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate. Your vehicle will then meet you and transfer you back to Arusha or Moshi.
If your flight is scheduled for the following day, additional accommodation and airport transfers can be arranged at an extra cost.
Elevation: 3,700 m to approximately 1,860 m
Distance: Approximately 20 km
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Moorland and Montane Forest
Main Destination: Mount Kilimanjaro
Accommodation: No accommodation, tour ends in Arusha/Moshi
Meals & Drinks: Breakfast and lunch included; non-alcoholic drinks
End of Tour
Your 7-day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro adventure ends in Arusha or Moshi after completing your journey to the Roof of Africa.
Additional hotel accommodation can be arranged before or after the trek at an extra cost. Airport transfers are also available according to your flight schedule.
Why Choose the Marangu Route?
The Marangu Route is an excellent choice for trekkers who prefer mountain hut accommodation instead of camping and a relatively straightforward trail profile. The route also includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Horombo, helping trekkers prepare for the higher elevations.
Despite its gradual approach, the summit attempt remains demanding. Proper preparation, a slow pace, hydration, appropriate equipment, and listening carefully to your mountain guide are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
